Mobile devices have changed how we communicate and gather information. For many of us, they are integrated into our daily habits: We wake up to the sound of our smartphone’s alarm and check messages and social media before we even get out of bed. A 2015 survey conducted by EDUCAUSE found that 83 percent of college-age students own smartphones and 43 percent own tablets.
Because our students already use mobile technology, the devices enable us to engage students in new ways. Not only do these devices extend learning outside of classrooms, they also offer opportunities to advance how we teach and learn. In fact, students wish that we better used technology in our teaching.
The mission of Boise State’s mobile learning initiative is to help instructors find ways to use mobile technology to meet their pedagogical goals and extend their students’ learning.
